John-Marshall Stubbs

John-Marshall Stubbs (born 1986) is a Texas-based painter whose work re-imagines the mythologies of the American frontier through a contemporary lens. A fifth-generation Texan, Stubbs draws on the sweeping narratives of the Wild West—its romantic individualism, rugged landscapes, and cinematic diaries—and blends them with references to pop art, surrealism, and early Renaissance experiments in perspective. His canvases evoke a flat back-drop quality, reminiscent of Western film sets, while employing drop-shadows and flattened figures to create depth and distortion. By revisiting the Trecento period in Italy and its nascent understanding of perspective, Stubbs juxtaposes historical techniques with modern materials and motifs. The result is work that is at once nostalgic and subversive—challenging the romantic ideal of the frontier while re-imagining its cultural resonance in the present day.
