Jessica Monette
Jessica Monette is an interdisciplinary artist born in New Orleans (1986) and currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation, and is driven by a profound exploration of Black memory, ancestral lineage, place, and displacement. Drawing from her roots in the Gulf Coast region and the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Monette uses materials such as soil, rope, cloth, and found architectural fragments to give shape to histories both lived and inherited. The work is grounded in cultural retention and the resilience of the African diaspora, yet it also acknowledges the ruptures caused by migration, environmental upheaval, and erasure. She holds an MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University and has exhibited in major venues that situate memory and materiality as central elements of a broader narrative of survival, renewal, and the ongoing legacy of Black creativity.
