Bo Joseph

Bo Joseph is a contemporary artist whose work explores the intersection of cultural symbols, collective memory, and historical narratives through abstract painting, sculpture, and works on paper. Drawing from images of artifacts, objects, and visual traditions from diverse cultures, he creates layered compositions that investigate themes of cultural exchange, appropriation, authorship, and visual sovereignty. Through processes of transformation, chance, and deconstruction, Joseph challenges fixed meanings and reveals unexpected connections between people, histories, and belief systems.

Born in Berkeley, California, in 1969, Joseph spent his early years between Oakland, Los Angeles, Paris, and San Francisco, experiences that fostered his interest in cultural diversity and visual language. He earned a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992 and has since received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Basil H. Alkazzi Award and fellowships from the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

Joseph’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally and is included in the collections of institutions such as the RISD Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and Guilin Art Museum. He lives and works in New York and Brooklyn.
