Angelbert Metoyer
Angelbert Metoyer (b. 1977, Houston) is an Afrofuturist, multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, drawing, sound, and experimental media. His practice transforms materials such as coal, tar, soil, gold dust, and found industrial fragments into visual languages that merge ancestral memory, cosmology, and speculative futurism.
Metoyer began exhibiting in 1994 at Project Row Houses in Houston, marking the start of a career that has since expanded across major cities in the United States and internationally. Over three decades, he has built a dynamic, research-driven practice that moves fluidly between studio experimentation and public art.
His work is held in significant public and institutional collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit; the African American Museum of Dallas; and the Syracuse University Libraries. Additional placements include the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies Program and the Mott-Warsh Collection.
In 2023, Metoyer completed the public monument I Am Barbara Jordan, installed at POST Houston. The bronze sculpture honors the iconic Texas leader with a contemplative, forward-looking presence that reflects Jordan’s legacy of justice, civic responsibility, and cultural impact.
In recognition of his influence on the cultural landscape of the state, Metoyer was named the 2025–2026 Texas State Artist (2D) by the Texas Commission on the Arts. He currently serves on the board of Project Row Houses.
5% of proceeds from the Angelbert Metoyer capsule collection will go to Project Row Houses, the Houston arts and community organization where he began exhibiting in 1994 and now serves on the board, WEBSITE: https://projectrowhouses.org
