Alexis Sones is a painter living and working in Austin, Texas. A graduate of Pomona College, her artistic journey took a profound turn in 2018 when her vision spontaneously restored after 25 years of wearing corrective lenses. This moment of personal transformation shifted her practice inward, moving her focus from representational nature scenes and portraiture to the rich, imaginative terrain of the subconscious.
Working primarily in oil paint, Alexis’ signature style is defined by fluid, snakelike strokes, organic forms, and a noticeable absence of hard edges. Her paintings explore alchemical themes of dissolution and re-formation—captured in her series “Dissolve,” “The Underneath,” and “Become.” These bodies of work trace the soul’s journey through loosening, remembering, and ultimately re-shaping itself into something more true.
Influenced by myth, color logic, and the concept of “uncolonizing the imagination,” Alexis allows instinct to lead her hand, resulting in unexpected shapes, vivid palettes, and new worlds emerging on canvas. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles and Austin and continues to evolve as a meditation on inner landscapes, personal transformation, and the primordial stories we carry within us.
